FAQ's
What is single origin coffee?
Single origin merely means that we can link the coffee back to one traceable source. Think of it like wine. Just as wine comes from specific vineyards, single origin coffee beans come from a single region or farm. This means they have a unique flavour profile that is influenced by factors like altitude, climate, soil, and processing methods.
Is single origin coffee better than blended?
Better is such a subjective term: It's simply a matter of preference!
Blended coffees offer a consistent, balanced flavour - which can be preferable for cafes and espresso machines, while single origins showcase the specific characteristics of a particular region.
If you're looking to explore different coffee flavours, single origin is the best way to do it.
How to brew single origin coffee
Anyway that you like! Single origin coffee beans work the same way as any other coffee beans. However, the best way to brew single origin coffee to highlight its unique flavours, is by using a method that doesn’t mask the notes - aka without milk. Pour-over methods like Chemex or V60 are ideal as they allow you to control the water temperature and extraction time, but Aeropress and black espressos can work too.
What should I look for when buying single origin coffee?
As with any premium product, there are always imitators trying to make money with lesser quality produce. For high quality beans: look for beans that specify the region or farm they're from.
Pay attention to the roast level, as a lighter roast will bring out more of the coffee's natural flavours. And don't forget to check the freshness date! Fresher is always better.
What is the best single origin coffee?
That's a tough one! The "best" coffee is subjective and depends on your personal taste.
However, some highly regarded single origin coffees come from regions like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Colombia. But for the best selling beans we’d have to say Hawaiian Kona and Jamaica Blue Mountain are up there with the best.
How can I learn more about single origin coffees?
Our blog posts contain tons of information on everything coffee related! Alternatively, the best way to learn about coffee is to taste them and experiment with different brewing methods and bean types, or even roasting your own green beans at home.
You can also Visit local coffee shops, ask baristas for recommendations, or attend cupping sessions to try out new varieties.
Why are single origin coffees more expensive?
Several factors contribute to the higher price of single origin coffee. The sourcing process is often more complex, as it involves finding specific farms and regions, and they are usually part of a campaign to give the workers a fair, living wage.
It is important to remember that coffee can only be grown in hyper specific conditions and only a small part of the world holds these unique conditions, and all are at the mercy of the weather - which has been getting worse with climate change. So you have a superior product; grown in niche conditions in small amounts and at the whim of the weather; all of which result in a higher cost.
