In the shadow of Mount Bratan, a volcano crowned by three caldera lakes in northern Bali six coffee-growing regions that form the heart of the Koperasi Sapta Winangun Kerti. Communities including Leket Sari, Giri Tani, Sari Mekar, Beji, and Uptiti Sara together cultivate around 400 hectares of coffee on these dramatic volcanic slopes.

Production across the region has faced challenges between 2022 and 2025, but Bali’s position below the equator offers a key advantage. The harvest season here is drier than on neighbouring Sumatra, creating ideal conditions for processing and allowing the cooperative to achieve consistently higher-quality coffees. Cool sea breezes help regulate drying temperatures, while a focus on natural processing reduces overall water demand.

Farming on these steep slopes brings its own difficulties. Rainfall runs quickly downhill, making water management a constant concern. To address this, the cooperative has invested heavily in infrastructure, including the creation of wells to support both farming and processing. Traditional Hindu irrigation systems, known as subak abian, are also used for coffee cultivation, but continued well development remains essential for the future of coffee production in the region.
